Krishna
Maharaj is a 67-year old businessman from London who has spent over
20 years in a Florida prison for a double-murder he absolutely denies
committing. Fifteen of those years have been on Death Row.
There is a mass of evidence to show that the prosecution's
case was fundamentally flawed and that he never received a
fair trial, but despite this, the US courts have rejected every
one of Krishna's appeals. After 20 years Krishna has finally
exhausted all his legal avenues so his only hope is for the Florida
Clemency Board, headed by Florida Governor Charlie Crist, to grant
him clemency.
The UK Government is behind Krishna's plea for clemency and wrote
to Governor Crist in support of Krishna in May this year. Over
the years the UK Government has submitted two briefs before the
US Courts in support of Krishna highlighting the Florida state's
breaches of international law designed to protect UK citizens
abroad. The European Union has also submitted briefs on
Krishna's behalf. Over the years, nearly 300 British
politicians have supported Krishna's case before the US courts,
but all to no avail.
For
more than 7,500 days, Krishna Maharaj's life has been hell. The
former self-made millionaire has been confined to a tiny cell which
is only 6x9 feet. His health has severely deteriorated. See 15
years on Death Row.
After enduring so long on Death Row, Krishna’s sentence was
commuted to life in prison in 2002. But he is still behind bars – fighting
for the chance to win his freedom
and return to England.
